Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Did you know there are a bunch of great bands playing this thing?  It’s free too, we like free.

Apparently there is some kind of “Corks and Forks” thing that cost money… I think I would perfer “Cans and Bands”

Drunken Unicorn - The Melvins

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

I’m not gonna pretend that I’ve been a fan of the Melvins since Ozma, but I’ve always understood their importance in the world of “heavy” music, and it wasn’t until about a year ago that I completely fell in love. I’ve always known who they were, the fact that they’ve been around forever, the fact that they’re still around, etc. Their impressive discograpy to me seemed formidable. I didn’t really feel like backtracking and wading through all their work, and to tell the truth I was a little confused at first. It just took me a while to realize that this is the shit for me. I’ve never been exposed to a band so uninterested in doing the same thing time and time again, which is why so many people have a hard time classifying them. Fans of grunge (if they still exist) will try to claim them as grunge, while metal fans will confine them to metal, and so on. While labeling is inevitable, the Melvins won’t get any of it from me, I just don’t even bother.

Finally , I had the chance to see them here in the ATL. This show wasn’t assigned to me, I specifically asked to cover it. I’m still having headaches from Sunday night. This was perhaps the loudest, most powerful show I’ve ever experienced. Corndogorama this year convinced me that sometimes maybe I should wear earplugs. I still had the same earplugs left over, I don’t know why, but the thought of using them again after so long freaked me out a little. So the Melvins provided some of the best unprotected aural sex ever (if you’re reading this aloud to someone, make sure you spell out “aural,” thanks). This was one of the dates promoting their new CD Nude With Boots. These new tracks, if you haven’t heard them, are pretty spectacular I’d say. The album’s title track and “the Kicking Machine” are my faves, quite energetic and dare I say lighthearted compared to their past work. Several were from 2006’s (A) Senile Animal, which is perhaps my favorite Melvins album so far. (A) Senile Animal marked the beginning of yet a newer lineup. Dale and Buzz thought it made more sense to add both Jared and Coady from tourmates Big Business, meaning they’ve had two drummers ever since. To many this would seem like excess, but since Coady and Dale are both incredible drummers, they’ve somehow managed to make it work with astounding results. I sometimes classify the Melvins as a very “task-based” band, which implies their hardworking nature (which I definitely appreciate), plus the fact that they’ve made albums in the past seemingly based on hypothetical questions (What if we have each member produce his own record? What if we release a series of three very different albums in a row?) This new dual-drummer lineup combined with the cozy accomodations of the Drunken Unicorn amounted to quite an ominous stage presence: thunder and lightning, hellfire and brimstone. Satan entered my ears and fucked with my brains until I felt like I’d taken an LD50 of quaaludes and set myself on fire. Astounding.

They finished up the set with the classic crowd-pleaser Boris from Bullhead, a song that solidifies their legacy as it inspired the genre-bending Japanese band of the same name.

Usain Bolt - New 200m World Record!!!

Attractive Eighties Women - Lightning Bolt

Bolt’s my favorite track and field athlete of these Olympics.  I’m predicting another world record tomorrow, when he runs the 400 meter.

(I spend most of my day trying to map which occasions merit blasting AEW’s Lightning Bolt.  So far, I’ve got:  when Usain Bolt’s competing, actual lightning storms, DragonCon weekend, and weddings in general.)

TONS of Shit to do

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Last Monday we rocked out 97 Estoria for the second weekly Have You Heard night.  We’re working with the fine Estoria folks and Brain Rock Studios on this free concert series. The Barberries played and SLAYED as usual, following their show up with an EXTREMELY cool DJ set.  It was better than putting the Nuggets compilation on shuffle.

You will be pleased to note that from now on all of our mastering will be completed by Brain Rock.  Do watch out for Jamie’s cat though if you go tour their facilities… he really likes human arms… like really really.  Despite his cat’s inter-species indiscressions they are awsome dudes and it’s because of them that you will have a bootleg of every show that happens at 97 Estoria.

Ok so new shit.

First I want to talk about Titty Titty Bang Bang.  Heres the deal.  I’m a dude.  I like tits.  Go figure.  I like them so much I want to save them from cancer.  Maybe not altruistic, but none the less if I have an opportunity to save breasts and rock the fuck out, you can count me in.

You can also count on these bands being there:

Quick stop on the promo’ing for a second. We’re listening to The Clash’s Combat Rock as we write this post. The beginning portion of “Strait to Hell” IS the song MIA samples for Paper Planes! Holy crap.

Ok so here’s some more, we’ve also been choosen as a featured blog in REGATOR which is an Atlanta site which grooms the best blogs and aggrigates them for you.  If you haven’t gotten an account yet, get one.  If you have an account just use this link to add us to favorites.

Also if you want to do something other than 97 Estoria next monday Royal Bangs are playing at the Drunken Unicorn.  Those guys are an amazing second choice to Have You Heard night.

Vaguely Music Related Things to Do, This Saturday:

reMixt Art Show at Mint Gallery

The nice people at Mint Gallery have gathered together a herd of Atlanta’s fringe (and, arguably, not-so-fringe) musicians to make both visual art and mixtapes to go along with their art.  The line up is impressive: Ben Coleman of Judi Chicago, members of Vera Fang and Sealions, Attractive Eighties Women’s Mack Williams (AKA Phoebe Cates), Bean Summers (musician-ish, right?), and at least a dozen more artist/musicians.

There’s a more comprehensive rundown of the artists and organizations involved in Jeremy’s article at Pine Magazine, which also contains some great quotes, like this one from Ben Coleman:

“The first mixtape I ever made was for a girl named Charlotte Harben when I was about 13 or 14,” said Coleman. “I never snogged Charlotte… [but] I was some kind of god when it came to meticulously arranging Blur, Primal Scream, and Charlatans songs.”

Anyway, the art goes up this Saturday at 8, and it looks like a fun way of answering all the “what are your top 3 b-sides”-type questions you’ve always wanted to ask your favorite Atlanta musicians.

Methane Studios’ 10th anniversary celebration at Alcove Gallery is also this Saturday, but it starts at 7, an hour earlier than the reMIXT show.  Methane have done the album art and show posters for a staggering number of indie bands.  Their work tends to be along the same faux-vintage lines as a lot of the Adult Swim related artists and animators - it’s an instantly memorable style which is made to look good against even the ugliest inner city concrete walls.

The show starts with a performance by Warm In the Wake, who’ve been playing a lot of great shows at Star Bar recently.  (Actually, Star Bar’s music booking in general has been fucking fantastic these past few months)

HYH Night at 97 Estoria with The Barberries

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Here’s something. Did you know that Have You Heard is sponsoring free Monday concerts at 97 Estoria? No cover, cheap Bush beer, and a chance to get closer to Atlanta bands than you’ll have anywhere else (seriously those estoria bathroom stalls are very private).

This week The Barberries will be coming through. You remember them from episode 32 and their session yeah?

Hope For Agoldensummer - Lost Tracks

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Why is Hope For Agoldensummer jumping for joy? I’d like to think it’s not because we fucked up and left off one of the songs we did for their session. Instead, they’re happy because we get to bring you the HYH Session lost track: Fortnight. Check it out, and while you’re at it listen to the rest of the beautiful HFAGS-HYH Session.
