Listening to Skeletal Lamping a few more times will no doubt lessen your ‘Frankenstein’ view of the record. It takes a little while to discover the treasure. But once that treasure is uncovered, holy shit, watch out.

I’m around my 10th listen at the moment. I give oM a ton of credit, and while the ‘frankenstein’ aspect of the record becomes less apparent as you become familiar with which parts are approaching, it never has a chance to build its musical ideas to climax as they shift from one mode to the other.

I said that about 40 out of 100 of the musical ideas on the record really captivated me, and they really are inventive and fun to listen to. However, there’s a need to fill in the blanks of their short segments, and when they aren’t fleshed out over a whole song you miss the subtlety that can be crafted from their form. I’ll point back to the guitar lines on Hissing Fauna’s Suffer For Fashion: they follow, inform, and cushion the oscillating vocals. When Kevin stops singing they start singing. It’s a well thought out and subtle part to a pulsing driving knock out of a song.

Still, Skeletal Lamping is much less of a downer record, and I can see it being easier to play at a party.
