Lakai Fully Flared and M83

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Why are we drawn to observe situations of life and death? Is it because we live in such security? Our decisions are each small reflections of these concepts, but their physical actuality is sealed away through mutual funds, automatic bank drafts, directions from the interstate, etc.

That is why music is so important. Music can be a grandiose gateway into a world outside of self and security. The video above and the M83 song in it are an example of the epic life or death struggle in everyday life. It was made by a company called Lakai which sells shoes to skateboarders, but whatever its commercial intensions this piece of film goes far beyond mere advertisement.

Big Winner Moment: Feist

feist holding junos

As you can see, Feist has so many accolades she can barely hold them all. Those are Juno awards by the way. They’re Canada’s answer to the grammy.

It was this very picture tonight that made my evening album choice, and it was a rewarding experience to revisit the singer’s 2007 album The Reminder. Quiet and reserved even in her most up beat numbers, Feist’s songs resonate with a dynamic strength. This is not languid croony acoustic rock. It’s smart, immaculately planned, fun, and every new moment is built to strengthen the next.

Kinda like these guys:

Dr. Dog new album

dogwood tree

I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, and whenever I’m inclined to look back I always seem to find comfort in sugar sweet melodies layered with three or five part harmonies. Naturally I put in a lot of Beach Boys, but I also find solace in the records that continued their tradition of experimentation fused with solid song writing. Last year’s amazing Strawberry Jam by Animal Collective is a perfect example.

Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog is running with this crowd and after four albums is more comfortable with their own place than most bands. Their brand of psychedelic Brian Wilson tinged freak folk holds my mind on long walks and recently has grabbed me while driving around and looking at Georgia’s dogwood trees bloom.

A few days ago they announced that a new album entitled FATE is coming soon. They described their process for creating the record as follows:

We spend a lot of time together, maybe more than any person should spend with another, but that’s not a complaint. It’s to say that when you spend this much time with a bunch of dudes, you learn from one another and you learn something about yourself. Not sure what that’s got to do with anything, but at the moment we listen to this record and think that all the time we spend together has as much to do with the album as anything else.

No wonder their songs make me want to hold the ones I love and smile at strangers.

Lemuria - Get Better

Lemuria
Get Better
2008 Asian Man Records

Lemuria is a fresh young pop meets indie powerlicious punk trio from Buffalo, [the Great State] New York. Sheena Ozzella leads vocals and plays guitar. Alexander Kerns is on drums and lends vocals. Jason Draper is on bass. Interestingly enough, the trio seems to take the name of what appears to have been an ancient civilization that once existed somewhere in the South Pacific. Not sure of the connection there, if any, but would love to pose question to Alexander during future interview [shameless invite to call me].

I cannot get enough of Pants. Clever lyrics that bring me straight back to the early unabashed know-it-all nineties in a good way. Flirtatious girl meets boy, girl dominates… uh… dialogue via girl lead vocals we came to know & love in this golden decade. Go figure. Here’s the thing, Pants would have been a hit by now in the nineties, for sure no doubt about it, so I am calling for a nineties Renaissance. Get Some Sleep reminds me of a guy I know… yeah I said it. I seriously do think Get Some Sleep is melodic pop at its best. Think Ode to Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites. No, I can’t resist. Mechanical is my least fav, but that’s not saying much because I still love it. I have nothing negative to say. Truth be told, these cats could be my neighbors - you get the sense that you know them and you’re happy to organically like them.
