First Impression of Gnarls Barkley ’s The Odd Couple

Monday, March 24th, 2008

gnarlsbarkley.jpg

I found a full album stream of the new Gnarls Barkley album over at spinner. We posted earlier about the single Run that was leaked. I thought the single held an extra layer of grime that gave promise for the follow up to Saint Elsewhere; however it’s only on the best tracks that Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse use a dense production with Cee-Lo’s immediately recognizable vocals electrically tuned to funk and generously slathered through the notes. Unfortunately most of the record falters as the two musicians seem to be missing the other’s intentions.

It seems that when Danger Mouse is at his best Cee-Lo is distracted and underwhelmed. The reverse is also true, and as a result The Odd Couple has a handful of ballads that despite the heartfelt efforts of Cee-Lo play as tedious filler.

The good news is that you can expect to hear demi-quality Gnarls Barkley churned out ad nauseum everywhere. Thanks to the momentum from St. Elsewhere, we’ll be hearing this record well into summer.

Once again, here’s that single:

What types of reviews do you want us to do?

Bradley and I were having an argument while we were preparing this week’s show. We want to know if you’re interested in Have You Heard covering bigger releases on the podcast.

Which type of review are you more interested in hearing on the podcast?

Stars Like Fleas - I Was Only Dancing

Friday, March 21st, 2008

I know what you’re thinking, GAWD WHY DON’T YOU JUST BLOG ABOUT SOME MUSIC DUDE!?

Ok, Lucky for you I was just about to do exactly that. So raise your hand if you’re a fan of Sufjan Stevens. Ok, how about Cat Stevens? Hmmm… Ugly Cassanova? If you have a soft spot for these records like I do or just can’t get enough of that Grizzly Bear sound, check Stars Like Fleas out. They’re not without resume either, they have all been in or contributed to: TV on the Radio, The Scarlett Johansson band, The Fiery Furnaces, Beirut, Tall Firs, Celebration, Mercury Rev, The Silent League ect. ect. And the production you just heard was assisted by Valgeir Sigurðsson who has produced and collaborated with Björk on her work for some time.

Little Dragon - Fortune

Friday, March 21st, 2008

My love of Little Dragon is well documented. I picked their eponymous record as one of the best of 2007 and I’ve posted about that record twice, and today I was happy to find a new track. It is a little bittersweet however that I find it through RCRD LBL. It’s not that I disagree with their taste, I was happy to find many of the artists that I enjoy also featured there. I only take issue with the concept that the new media (which for a few moments seemed in our hands) for a good time was user created but is being infiltrated by our corporate counterparts.

I fear that with independent radio stations shutting down because they can’t afford to pay royalties, and with more and more blogs being part of global marketing businesses that we cannot hope to keep step with their ability to put out more content than we can, and make exclusive deals that we will never be able to. I contacted LD to ask permission to post a couple tracks from that record and they were extraordinarily nice and gracious. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer response.

I wonder sometimes, that if the record industry was more interested in forward thinking or new ideas if you’d rather, would I have the same opinion of the business side of popular music. While it’s impossible to know the answer this, and while often I become aware that good things to come as a result of the pairing with music and other industries. I am constantly reminded that one must be careful in each choice made. Each business deal with each artist is a little different. There are no blanket statements such as “Sell Out” or “Indie” we can’t decipher the labels as good or evil.

An interview recorded recently between my friend Julia and artist Chris Walla quoted (from paste magazine on the subject of record labels)

“I don’t feel like either is better than the other in any really significant way. I will say that I’ve had experiences at both majors and indies that really feel open and collaborative in the way that a good label relationship should. And then I’ve had experiences at both where somebody who shouldn’t have any creative involvement in a project has creative involvement in a project for some unknown reason. “

So why not recognize the industry for what it is and instead of looking to become a signed artist of a major label, or signed to an indie label, why not ignore labels all together? Let us as artists, producers, critics, and listeners use only the tools available to us for that which we absolutely need to generate our art. This is my manifesto.

(an interview with Ian Mckay on Dischord and the music buisness from Magnet)

“The American business model is based on expansionism. There’s a theory that if you’re not growing, you’re dead. I reject that. If you wanted to be in the bakery business and bake good bread and give people a sense of, “Well, I can go there for good bread,” you make the bread, they buy it and go. And everyone’s happy. If you have to buy all the bakeries or if you have to be bought by other bakeries, it stunts the possibilities. You don’t know what can happen when you develop a long-standing relationship with your community.”

When we began this project I thought that it could lead me to somewhere new, open up doors for me, or put me in touch with better, newer, or brighter artists. I realized just the opposite. I brought that to the show. I became aware of newer artists. I took the time to judge each one according to my own tastes and no one elses. Most importantly I never said anything that I didn’t believe.

If I had an opportunity to take money or help from an organization in exchange for control of this blog or podcast I would only choose to do it if it improved the website in a meaningful way.

I hope that everyone reading this enjoys reading our blog, and if reading this or someone else’s blog inspires you as a reader to generate content of your own, please let us know, as we can’t wait to see what you’ll write too. Also if you have an idea for this blog please don’t be shy. You may be the best writer that I’ve yet to have the pleasure of reading.

William Blake said

“Invent your own mythology or be slave to another man’s.”

Link to the new Little Dragon song (I could not link to the song or re-host as RCRD LBL wants you to know all about BMWs)

And heres something to listen to while you go out and get started on that project you’ve been too intimidated to start. Have You Heard Believes in you.

Boo and Boo Too

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Few bands have a more visceral sound than Boo and Boo Too. It’s “pop songs by mental patients” mentality reminds me at times of Cap ‘n Jazz, with vocal wailing but at the same time having the loose dreamy pop structure of Pavement. I’ve only heard 4 cuts off the upcoming full release, but it immediately grabbed me.

These are love songs for Velociraptors (on drugs).

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention, when punk preschoolers crash nerds parties and murder them because they talk about blogs, zombies will take over the world (and Karen O’s plan will finally take effect [Dudes from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Butthole Surfers, and The Beastie Boys can come too])

New Mates of State album

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

linkoping-lips.jpg

The lovable Mates of State duo Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel have over the past few years been adopted by the dinner-party-hosting IKEA-loving upper middle class. As evidence see their performance of Phantom Planet’s California on This American Life’s episode What I Learned from Television. As a side note, the David Rakoff segment on that episode is one of the funniest pieces of radio I’ve ever heard.

Turtlenecked aficionados around the nation will pause the Steve Jobs keynote speech playing on their iPod touch to tip a caramel macchiato for the announcement that Mates of State just posted about a new album on their myspace:

Dude, it’s coming fast, Finally! The record is called “Re-Arrange Us” and it will hit the stores May 20th. We recorded it all over this fine country, with 3 amazing producers: At Tiny Telephone in San Francisco, CA with Chris Walla, at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT with Peter Katis, and at Public Hi-Fi in Austin, TX with Jim Eno. Then, we shaped, massaged, and mixed all the pieces together again with Peter Katis. This sh*t is for real.

Here’s a track listing:
1. Get Better
2. Now
3. My Only Offer
4. The Re-Arranger
5. Jigsaw
6. Blue and Gold Print
7. Help Help
8. You Are Free
9. Great Dane
10. Lullaby Haze

Upcoming tour dates:
5/25/08 George, WA @ Sasquatch
5/28/08 Los Angeles, CA @ Henry Fonda Theater [Pre-Sale]

Look for some songs arriving shortly, along with lots of tour dates, and a video for Get Better!

Peace.

Then again, most of their audience will find it hard to hear this news via myspace as a large segment of the band’s fan base has moved to facebook. One Mates of State fan remarked, “I think facebook is a lot cleaner. It doesn’t have the chaos of myspace, and I’m not getting three sexbot requests a day.”

This is the previously mentioned and seriously epic cover:
