New Gnarls Barkley Single Leaked

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

gnarlsbarkleytheoddcouple

Yesterday indie blog Mission Freak posted their “exclusive” preview of Gnarls Barkley’s new track Run. It stayed up for a grand total of almost three hours until the powers that be put the hurt on MF and they gave it up. See the hilarious post here.

However, if there’s five tracks on the net then there’s a thousand, especially considering the monstrous popularity of the duo’s last single Crazy. Not to mention the fact that Brooklyn Vegan, who probably has had the track in hands for a while, immediately pointed a big finger at the leak. The morning after you can easily find the track if you try.

Run is adrenaline Motown with a healthy covering of The Go! Team. Check it out through a re-leaker conveniently located out of the country and out of reach from the music police.

The Angels of Light

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

I’m sure some of you could have guessed that we’re going to review the new Xiu Xiu record for this weeks episode of our podcast, we’re also working on the format a little so that our ideas are a little more concise… bonus for you!

As I’ve been listening to the records I noticed a song on Women as Lovers guest starring Michael Gira. I realized that some may be unfamiliar with his name but I’m a really big fan. He was the principal creative force for The Swans for many years then later Started a group called The Angels of light. What a creative powerhouse! Here are a couple samples from Sings Other People. It’s almost Postmodern Country, some people might say Apocalyptifolk.

If you dig on Tom Waits you will LOVE this album

Flight of the Conchords

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

So you know that creepy stalker character on the HBO series Flight of the Conchords? I ran into her on my trip to NY in a Brooklyn bar. I didn’t want to bother her, but I did take several photos until I had one for verification. Does that make me a creepy stalker to a celebrity creepy stalker?

You’ll see why when it’s business time. (and yes I know the date’s wrong on my camera. thanks seerv23)

AsobiSeksu-StayAwakeVinylCover

Brooklyn based Asobi Seksu has been floating their dreampop for a while now and has started to garner a lot of well deserved attention. I thought their 2007 album Citrus gave Blonde Redhead’s 21 more than just a run for its money. It won the race, grabbed a victory drink, and sprinted to third in the 100 meters.

With all this new attention they’ve been touring Europe and the UK, and today the grind may have got to them. Their myspace announced cancellation of a few dates in the UK. The group will solider on in a few days, and if you get the opportunity, whether in the states or outside of them, you should check out their show.

The myspace blog: “Due to circumstances beyond our control we have to cancel three of our upcoming UK shows. We will still be performing on February 15 in London at ULU, so hopefully all you folks outside of London can make it in for this show. We can’t wait to see you all again and apologize for having to cancel on such short notice.”

Ladyhawk documentary (Let Me Be Fictional)

Monday, January 28th, 2008

So Julia beat us to the punch announcing that ladyhawk have a new album set for release but we just found out that there will be a documentary detailing the recording which has apparently taken place in a pseudo construction site with no running water.

Now that is dedication.

And Adam thought that Black Mountain was going to be the rockenest record this year…

King Robot EXCLUSIVE

Friday, January 25th, 2008

The first thing people think when you tell them that you’re in Atlanta is that you must see famous rappers hanging out in parking lots on giant cars with giant wheels spinning all the time. While it’s true that I’ve met some famous rappers on more than one occasion since I moved here, the guys who roll in Buicks with spinners rolling around aren’t rappers, they’re fakesters.  The truth is that Atlanta is pretty tolerant and really diverse. Especially when it comes to rap.

A co worker of mine once told me that there was a major rap magazine that had only awarded a perfect score to one album that didn’t come from NYC. I wondered how that was possible with Rappers like MF Doom and King Robot hanging around Atlanta, which brings me to my post.

King Robot has an unorthodoxed style to say the least but it has to be among the most creative music I’ve heard in a long time. What If Eminem had a doctorate in physics… It doesn’t matter because we already have King Robot. These tracks are MUST HAVES.

Cat Power Jukebox Review

Friday, January 25th, 2008

To review “Jukebox” Cat power’s recently released LP (spiritual successor to “Covers” circa 2000) one must be prepared for change. Gone is the self conscious girl, dowdy and minimal while defiantly standing on stage with her hair in her face and a clear distaste for polish or manufactured ascetic. We are now listening to a vocalist. A vocalist in the same vein perhaps as many female performers that have come before her, and there is my bone to pick.

Cat Power for better or worse was something of a unicorn. Beautiful, soulful, wholly unique and uncompromising. For many of us who weathered her earlier concert years, this became something we wore as a badge. We didn’t want to go and watch an entertainer. We wanted something we could perceive to be real and rough around the edges with an honest beauty. Chan Marshall provided this aesthetic perfectly. We drew lines in the sand and stood by her even when her fair weather fans walked out due to seeming intoxication of our heroine. We not only tolerated it but we began to like it. Like a bad relationship however, even if you grow to accept and like your partners problems, there are still no guarantees.

Que the new Chan Marshall. Seemingly sober and full of wisdom and professionalism. This new woman who we were given hints of during 2006’s “Greatest” is prepared to embrace her craft as a business person. Jukebox is full of competent singing. In fact the musical quality is the records strongest suit. All songs are recorded with laser perfection. All musicians involved can listen to the record and think to themselves “this is just right“. So why do I sound so distrustful? Two reasons, this seems to be a complete 180 in contrast to her earlier works and this record only brings one new song to the table.

It’s a covers record. It’s full of songs that have all (except one) had a moment in the sun, including Chan’s own song Metal Heart. But remember this is Cat Power the vocalist and to a much diminished degree a creative artist. Maybe it would even feel different if she were covering something a bit more obscure and less obvious. These songs don’t need Chan to shine, all they need is a good producer and a good voice. It begs the question, if no one knew this was a “Cat Power” record, would it generate any attention on it’s own?

I have to admit that because I have a preconceived notion of what Cat Power is, I’m predisposed to react more strongly to either give her credit or condemn her for making a record more suited to the musical palette of my older sisters. But in the end the record is a simple pink fluffy cloud. It’s fun for a listen but ultimately leaves me shrugging my shoulders and thinking of records with more depth. I.E. Dear Chan Marshall, Please don’t cover yourself again. I’m glad that you’ve grown as a person and are having fun singing old standards, but re-recording your own material is something that should be left to people who have run out of things to say. I hope thats not the case with you.

Love (and communication),

Bradley

P.S. How come bloggers aren’t allowed to post anything from your new record?

Puzzle Muteson

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

If you heard Puzzle Muteson peripherally you might mistake it for Cat Power. Upon closer inspection you would may remember that she hasn’t made a record that sounds anything like this in a long time. Terry is a curious artist from the UK that reminds me that some of the best music is still made on shoestring budgets and big hearts. If you’re in Ireland anytime soon I expect you attend one of his concerts (also he has more tracks available free as air on his myspace, none are disappointing.)
